Calls To Action

BUSINESS AMBITON FOR 1.5ºC

The fight against climate change is essential to the fulfilment of the UN 2030 Agenda and one of the greatest challenges of our times. Bearing this in mind, the “Business Ambition for 1.5ºC – Our Only Future”, campaign was launched in 2019, focused on the urgent need to decrease greenhouse gas emissions and to promote the transition to a low carbon economy in order to achieve zero net emissions in 2050.

Business Ambition for 1.5ºC, led by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) sciencebasedtargets with the support of United Nations Global Compact and the We Mean Business Coalition, encourages companies to make a strong commitment to fighting climate change by setting concrete targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

By signing up to this commitment, organisations commit to one of two options or both:

Option 1 – 1.5ºC science-based emissions reduction targets: the companies commit to set science-based emissions reduction targets across all scopes, in line with 1.5ºC emissions scenarios and the criteria and recommendations of the Science Based Targets initiative;

2 Option – Net-zero science-based emissions reduction targets: the companies commit to achieve net zero emissions by 2050, in line with interim quantitative targets of 1.5ºC and with the criteria and recommendations of the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi).

The Global Compact Network Portugal joined the campaign from the outset, launching this important call to action to the Portuguese companies. On November 6, 2019, within the scope of the international conference "Making Global Goals Local Business - Iberia", 20 companies took the stage at Culturgest, Lisbon, to sign the Business Ambition for 1.5ºC Pledge before Lise Kingo, at the time CEO and Executive Director of the United Nations Global Compact.
